How To Harness The Power of Intention

The second principle of “Live Your Best” is to align your
actions with your intentions. This is fairly simple concept, and
is also extremely powerful. When you bring your intention and
your actions together, you are able to accomplish GREAT things,
with less effort.

In this article, I'll share with you some information on how to
play with intentions in order to make your life run more
smoothly.

There are four steps to harnessing the power of intention:

1) Ask for what you REALLY want.

There are two components to this step. First, you need to
get really clear on what you want, and, also, on WHY you
want it. For example- you might say, “Hmmm… what I
really want is more money.” Well, why do you want that?
Maybe so you can take a nice vacation, or pay down some
loans, or to save for your children's education. In order to
harness the power of intention, you will then to state that
you would like more money for the purpose of taking a
vacation, or paying loans, etc. Thinking about more money,
and linking it to what you really want, improves the
impact of your intention.

2) Clear out any resistance to what you're asking for.

In this step, you will need to “clear out” all the reasons for
why you can't have what you're intending. Very often, we
put something out in our minds, “Hmm.. I would LOVE to
work a 4-day week”, and then we immediately “take it back”
by saying, “Oh no. I couldn't LIVE on a 4-day week”. So,
therefore, our intention is unclear. We really want something
that we're thinking is not possible. So it doesn't come, and
we look at this as proof of how we can't get what we
really want.

Try this, instead: Pick something that you would
really like to have happen- something small, like getting a
great parking space, or doing something without hassle. State
a clear intention: “I intend to find a great parking space,
easily”, or “I intend to complete my bill paying quickly and
easily”, and then allow yourself to hold, just for a bit, that
this really is possible. See what happens. I often use this
technique to find great parking spots- even my friends
have noticed!

3) Allow what you've asked for into your life.

Sometimes, we ask for new events or experiences to come into
our lives, but don't have the mental or physical “room” for
them. One of my clients, “Mary”, really wanted to find a
wonderful man to date. However, Mary had booked herself so
solid with work commitments, classes, friends, and family
obligations that she had little time or energy to invest in a new
relationship. She agreed to restructure her life in line with
her true priorities. Once she had made some room for him,
a wonderful man showed up. Mary demonstrated a solid
commitment to her goal, and changed her behavior to reflect
her true priorities. This is the power in aligning your actions
with your intentions.

You might also think of it in terms of taking a road trip.
If you know where you want to go, but continually take
actions which move you farther from your destination, you
will never get there. The easiest trips occur when you know
where you're going, and move directly towards your goal.

4) Notice and be thankful when what you've asked for
shows up in your life.

This step is really important. When you have stated an
intention, and it shows up in your life- remember to notice
this and be thankful for it. The more focus you place on
noticing and being thankful, the easier and easier it is to
successfully create the life you really want.

You can create the life of your dreams. Start by intending
to do so! See you next month!
