Rachna's Note
February 2003
Dear Reader,
Hello, and welcome to our February issue. The focus
of this month's feature article is on forgiveness-
and how you can forgive yourself, first- so you
can be kinder, gentler, and more understanding
with the other important people in your life.
I hope you enjoy it. See you next month,
Rachna
p.s. Thank you for passing this newsletter on to your
friends & family- this is how we grow!

Forgive Yourself First
(c) 2003. Dr. Rachna D. Jain

I've been thinking, some, lately, about the idea of
forgiveness. If you take the word, "forgive" apart,
you have two words: for, and give. For might mean,
"in favor of", and give, might mean, "to offer as a
present". So, then, forgive might mean "in favor of
offering as a present".
You might have heard the term, "forgiveness is a
gift you give yourself, first.", and this, actually,
is the focus of this article. As I move through my day-
going to the bank, or standing in line at the grocery
store, or coaching my clients on the telephone, I am
struck, again and again, by how self-critical and
self-judgmental people are. A woman at the bank adds
her deposit incorrectly, and she says, "I always do
that. I'm horrible with math." An elderly woman in
the grocery store apologizes, "Sorry, honey, I'm
too old to move any faster." Some of my clients,
on the phone, say things like, "I'm so stupid.
I can't believe I did that. I know better than
that. That was dumb. Now I'll never get hired.
What if I end up looking stupid? What if I fail?
I must have been crazy to think I could pull this
off…"
Based on these occurrences, it seems like many
of us spend time blaming and judging ourselves
for our faults- whether or not these faults
really exist. For the woman in the bank: couldn't
there be another reason why she added her deposit
incorrectly? Could she have laughed, and said,
instead, "Oh- oops. I've just been so busy! Or
"Oh- thanks for catching that." For the elderly
woman in the grocery store: couldn't she have
said, "I like to take my time when I'm shopping?"
or "excuse me, please pass me- I'll be here for
a minute." Or, during coaching: "Well, that
didn't turn out like I hoped. How could I do
it differently next time?"
In all these examples, the people involved could
have found a way to acknowledge the exact same
situation- but from a place of self-acceptance/
forgiveness, rather than one of self-blame,
self-judgment, or self-criticism. Sometimes,
it's almost like we're so used to criticizing
ourselves that we do it to ourselves first-
right away- so no one else gets the chance.
This month, in the spirit of giving yourself a
gift, why not aim for a bit more self-praise
and a little less self judgment? You'll find
your sense of joy and enthusiasm begin to rise,
as you realize that you really are wonderful-
and shouldn't change a thing.
