snow here on the East Coast seems to have finally..
well... ceased. It will be nice to return to more
pleasing temperatures and to welcome the Spring
season in a few more weeks.

Why People Don't Heal

Do you know anyone who talks, almost constantly,
about all the bad or negative things that have ever
happened to him or her? A person who can remember
every sad or embarrassing thing from his/her whole life?

Have you ever stopped to wonder why these people are
like this? I have- especially because it doesn't seem
like reliving the pain ever makes it go away.

Carolyn Myss, in her book, "Why People Don't Heal-
and How They Can", talks about a kind of bonding-
"woundology" which occurs when two (or more) people
have experience a similar kind of injury, and they
"bond" around this injury. They talk about the injury,
tell the story of the events leading up the injury,
talk about how their hopes and dreams changed after
the injury- in short, they live the experience
over and over, when, in reality, the experience
may have only lasted a few minutes.

I want to make a distinction here- I'm not talking
about those people who have experienced significant
mental or emotional illness and require support to
return to health. I'm talking, rather, about the
people who are basically intact and healthy, but
maybe had one huge disappointment- more of an
emotional injury- that they've never forgiven,
and never forgotten.

For example, one of my clients went through a
terrible breakup with her boyfriend of 6 years-
it wasn't her choice, and she was devastated by
this ending. She found it difficult to know how
to move forward from this- until a similar situation
happened to a co-worker. Immediately, my client
"bonded" with this co-worker, and they swapped
gory stories of their respective break-ups.
They continued to speak the language of
"woundology"- retelling and reliving these
experiences over and over. They used the break-ups
as justification for their anger, they made their
ex-boyfriends "wrong"- they used their past
experiences to avoid new connections or
relationships- in short, they talked about the
past, but made little attempt to move on into
the future.

While there is value in sharing our pain with
another, there is a point where sharing our
pain becomes akin to holding back our own growth.
The next time you find yourself speaking the
language of "woundology" (and yes, sometimes,
we all do!) ask yourself, "what would I be
like if I could just heal this and move on?" -
and then take the very next positive action you
think of. In this way, you will begin to heal,
as you move into the wonderful potential of
your wonderful future.
