Rachna's Note
May 2003
Dear Reader,
Welcome to this month's issue. It's been a
hectic month so far- I just returned from
several weekends away. I had a great time,
but it's good to be back.
This month's feature article focuses on
saying no to say yes.
I hope you enjoy it. See you next month,
Rachna
p.s. Thank you for passing this newsletter
on to your friends & family- this is how
we grow!

Saying No to Say Yes

Over the past few weeks, I've been presented
with a lot of opportunities for collaboration.
This has been really fun, for the most part-
except in those cases where I didn't feel that
I wanted to collaborate with the person who asked.
"No, thanks", has always been somewhat tough for me
to say, especially when someone asks, directly, if
we might work together on a project. It's much easier
to say, "no, thanks" in less direct situations- like
being out in a group, or at a networking event or
something else. It seems more cutting, more personal
when someone has approached you one to one, and is
waiting for your answer.
In the past, I would have tried to make this situation
work- it wasn't "nice" to look out for myself first.
However, as more opportunities present themselves,
does it really make sense to agree to stuff you don't
want to do? Wouldn't it, just maybe, be better to say
No to something so you can say YES to something else?
Do you believe you have a right to life, liberty, and
pursuit of happiness? Do you exercise your right to say
No when you don't feel like doing something? Or, like
most people, do you Yes a bit more than you would like?
What moves you to say yes when don't really want to?
Most often, you say yes because you want to keep the
other person from feeling upset or hurt. You don't
want them to feel angry in you, or disappointed in
you. Maybe you fear being judged or criticized by
them, so you try to avoid this by saying what you
think they want to hear. The challenge with this
approach, though, is that people start to expect
you to say yes all the time- and No becomes even
more difficult to say later on.
Take a minute and think about your life. What are the
situations in which you have sacrificed your personal
dreams, desires, or preferences by saying Yes when you
really wanted to say No?
Are any of these situations occurring right now?
While I do understand that, sometimes, we might have to
agree to do something in order to please someone
important, I think it's just as important, at
least sometimes, to say No just to please yourself.
If you're ready to begin shifting the balance more to
your favor: Start small. Practice Know that, as you
say yes to YOUR dreams and YOUR desires, the whole
world will benefit-but only after you do.
